Blue-eyed Dreamer
By: Audrey Russell
Come now, my love,
be merry!
Wherefore thine
eyes seem blue?
Though skies be grey
Thou knowest
blue shall follow
and even now
what better
mirror
hath the sky
for our love
a tree
lush
firm-rooted
in the
soft-mattressed grass
than a
sheltering sky
of
down-feather
clouds?
And when I go
and comest blue
the sky shall be
my eyes for you
and you alone
Forever.
* * * * *
But seest thou not, my love?
The sky is cold
is true
It rests above
Snow-blanketing the heavens
perfection
unmarred, though
trees their
slivers stretch
in menace
frozen
their lush
of summer sprawled in silhouette
shivering
leaves against
the wind
that brushes
chill
their
nakedness
Mine eyes of grey
see through them
clear through to
that cold grey Sky
Oh, green pity!
for thine eyes of blue
see not
love’s shadows
as mine eyes do.
be merry!
Wherefore thine
eyes seem blue?
Though skies be grey
Thou knowest
blue shall follow
and even now
what better
mirror
hath the sky
for our love
a tree
lush
firm-rooted
in the
soft-mattressed grass
than a
sheltering sky
of
down-feather
clouds?
And when I go
and comest blue
the sky shall be
my eyes for you
and you alone
Forever.
