By Not Sophia/Minerva

My mother wanted to name me Sophia.
My mother wanted to name me Minerva.
Who would I have been if I was Sophia?
Sophia knows when to shut up.
Sophia is coordinated.
Sophia’s laugh doesn't sound like a dying donkey.
If I was Minerva, would my limbs be longer?
Would I work at a record store,
And drink black coffee?
HOWEVER, I am not her.
I don’t shut up
I sound like a donkey when I laugh.
My legs are stumpy,
And coffee is too bitter for me.
But maybe I’ll meet Sophia or Minerva,
Maybe I’ll see her cross the street.
Our eyes will catch,
And we will know.

“Mockingjay Part 1”
By: Luke Fields
I must admit, I didn’t start reading the actual series until the first movie had been released. However, I was immediately hooked. The actors’ performances in the first two films astounded me, but Mockingjay outdoes them all. The performances of all were fantastic. Julianne Moore’s performance as President Coin was in stark contrast with Donald Sutherland’s President Snow. However, the scenes involving their characters are some of the best parts of the picture. All of that being said, the film did seem slightly awkward at points such as when Katniss returns to District 12 with Gale and the not-exactly romance between them. However, the film is masterful in its blending of suspense, tragedy, and comedy. Even when you know what’s coming, you are on the edge of your seat. The film is interspersed with many tasteful comedic moments which are desperately needed in a film with such dark subject matter as this. The battle scenes were easily the strongest part of the entire picture, however few there were. It certainly left me wanting more. One of the saddest moments for me personally was seeing the wonderful performance of the late Phillip Seymour Hoffman, to whom the film was dedicated. All in all, despite a few shortcomings, Mockingjay Part 1 is one of the best films of 2014. Now we just have to wait another year for the next one…

Comet Dust on Earth
By: Luke Fields
According to Phys.org, researchers at Kyushu University have discovered comet dust present in the ice of Antarctica. These particles, according to the website, were found when they drilled over 58 feet into the ice. The particles were so small they have to be measured in micrometers. This discovery is a breakthrough as it was not previously thought that the dust from a comet could survive the journey through Earth’s atmosphere. Furthermore, comet dust is important for research purposes as it may reveal what comets contributed to the formation of the Earth.

Audrey's Poetry Corner
Autumn Sky,
thy creamy cloud,
thy rock of gritty grey,
thy road-scraped snow
a caged refuge
thine ice soft-frozen
‘round my glass-mush heart
Oh Sky, in mind
so solid,
in dreams
thy crystal form
seem’st so
fragile that
it wouldst must
break
beneath
the sun of
melting love
Oh! uncertain bed in which to lay!
And yet ‘tis one
in which
my heart
would have me rest
my head.
